The Ohio State University's primary resources in geographic information science are found in three departments, two schools and an interdisciplinary center. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, Department of Geography, Department of Geological Sciences, along with the School of Architecture (City and Regional Planning section and Landscape Architecture section) and the School of Natural Resources, and the Center for Mapping each include significant activities in geographic and land information sciences. The Center for Mapping fosters the cooperation of these entities at The Ohio State University.
The Geodetic Science and Surveying section (Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science) is the oldest unit still extant in the U.S. offering specialist education in these fields. Since its inception in 1952, it has become internationally renowned for the quality of its program and graduates. The newest division is the School of Natural Resources, which began planning its activity in geographic and land information sciences in 1987.
Working within various disciplines and applications in geographic information, these five units (three departments and two schools) at The Ohio State University grant undergraduate and graduate degrees, conduct innovative research, act as consultants, support governmental agency activities, and provide services to private industry and citizens.
